He is the son of Patricia Tresvant (and Ralph Hall). Tresvant enjoyed music as a child with his younger siblings, brother Andre and sister LaTonya. Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Bobby Brown and Michael Bivins started performing at local talent shows when some of their junior high school friends suggested putting together a group. Brooke Payne (a local producer and songwriter) saw them and took them to audition. Payne was also a choreographer and manager. Payne gave the boys the name New Edition after they auditioned for him. This was to indicate that they were a new version of Jackson 5. Maurice Starr wanted to create a new version of The Jackson 5 and signed them to Streetwise Records. Ronnie DeVoe, the nephew of Payne, was also added to the group. Their debut album Candy Girl was released in 1983. The group’s debut album, Candy Girl, was a success. It spawned the hit singles “Popcorn Love”, “Is This the End,” and the title track.
